On Shining Waters
Pupils from Solent Infant School and Solent Junior School raised their voices in celebration as they joined a massive city-wide musical collaboration to mark 100 years since Portsmouth was granted city status.
The two schools partnered with Portsmouth Music Hub for an ambitious digital music project. Children from both schools rehearsed and recorded a brand-new centenary song titled 'On Shining Waters'. The track was specially commissioned for the anniversary and composed by acclaimed musician Emily Barden.
The project brought together the local community on an unprecedented scale. Portsmouth Music Hub extended the invitation to schools, community choirs, theatre groups, and local organisations. The final digital collaboration starred over 50 choirs and schools from across the city and beyond, creating a powerful musical tribute to Portsmouth’s rich history and bright future.
Participation in the project gave the pupils at both Solent schools a unique opportunity to connect with their local heritage through the arts, while collaborating remotely with thousands of other young singers across the region.
The final digital performance of 'On Shining Waters' was released as part of the official centenary celebrations, showcasing the collective talent and community spirit of Portsmouth's next generation.
